Manifesta 4
EUROPEAN BIENNIAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART
25 MAY - 25 AUGUST 2002, FRANKFURT/MAIN
e-manifesta.org in an on-line infrastructure that will provide a frame for reflection on several of the issues proposed by artists and curators and is in fact a contribution to the overall Manifesta-4 debate. Providing a first hand experience of manifesta discussion, critics and debate. Technologies To The People has always developed, supported and designed platforms for artists base on a strict sense of independence. The chance to work again into an artistic event like Manifesta-4 is another example of the important work carried out by the Technologies To The People Foundation in order to showcase aspects of contemporary life.

Organized by Giancarlo Politi and Helena Kontova, editors of Flash Art
magazine, together with Milan Knizak and Tomas Vlcek, directors of the
National Gallery in Prague, the inaugural edition of the Prague
Biennale, "Peripheries become the center," is one of the major art
events of the year. This benchmark exhibition showcases the work of
around 260 emerging artists from all over the world, selected by a team
of 30 influential curators, to create a pluralistic vision of
contemporary art today. A huge survey realized with a low budget
(compared to other blockbuster exhibitions), the Prague Biennale has
pushed its organizers to face amazing challenges, but these constraints
represent a move towards new horizons, new solutions, and new exhibiting
philosophies.

Donostia-San Sebastian has been selected because of its dynamic historical and socio-political background, as well as its trans-regional importance. The city has developed an increasingly vibrant cultural identity through daring initiatives on the part of its independent artists, galleries and institutions. At the same time, the local art scene has shown a strong commitment to the International Foundation Manifesta as co-producers and organisers of the 5th Manifesta biennial edition.

Art should provide opportunities for critical discussion

By Thomas Wagner
Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung, 16.08.2002

It is a well-known fact in art appreciation that the observer can only notice and evaluate many things about a work of art if he or she knows the artistic and thematic background. Thus it is no wonder that Documenta 11, the 11th quinquennial edition of the world's premier contemporary art exhibition in Kassel, has had more participants than ever before in its official guided tours.

Almost one-quarter of all visitors are being escorted through the exhibition or are being informed in an introductory lecture by specially trained “experts,“ the exhibition reported. External guides may not give guided tours, however. This ban is now a cause of annoyance.

The argument was partly provoked by a guided tour given by the association of the Städel museum in Frankfurt, which was interrupted by the Documenta authorities. Museum director Stephan Mann, who accompanied the group, believes the ban endangers the right to visit the exhibition freely and democratically.

Videokunst / Von Walter Grasskamp

man stets mittendrin ankommt.
