		1541 Reads Art should provide opportunities for critical discussion By Thomas Wagner Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung, 16.08.2002 It is a well-known fact in art appreciation that the observer can only notice and evaluate many things about a work of art if he or she knows the artistic and thematic background. Thus it is no wonder that Documenta 11, the 11th quinquennial edition of the world's premier contemporary art exhibition in Kassel, has had more participants than ever before in its official guided tours. Almost one-quarter of all visitors are being escorted through the exhibition or are being informed in an introductory lecture by specially trained “experts,“ the exhibition reported. External guides may not give guided tours, however. This ban is now a cause of annoyance. The argument was partly provoked by a guided tour given by the association of the Städel museum in Frankfurt, which was interrupted by the Documenta authorities. Museum director Stephan Mann, who accompanied the group, believes the ban endangers the right to visit the exhibition freely and democratically. Read more... (2605 bytes more) comments?

Der Beniner Künstler hat ihn mit zwei Augenlöchern versehen und auf diese Weise in eine afrikanische Tanzmaske verwandelt. Ganz ähnliche Verfahren wählen auch andere außereuropäische Künstler der diesjährigen Documenta: Sie schlüpfen in die Kostüme der maîtres fous, der einstigen Kolonialherren, um durch deren Brille auf die Kultur des Westens zu blicken. Dort ist er Kurator am Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris an. Darüber hinaus hat Obrist Ausstellungen in New York, Paris, Wien, Tokio, Bangkok, Hamburg und London kuratiert. Nach einem Wirtschafts- und Politikstudium wandte er sich Anfang der 90er Jahre der zeitgenössischen Kunst zu. Seither publizierte er zahlreiche Bücher, darunter Gespräche mit Gerhard Richter, Christian Boltanski und Gilbert & George. FAZ.NET sprach mit ihm über die Documenta11. 		136 Reads Als im Jahr 1955 der Kasseler Kunstprofessor Arnold Bode die erste documenta organisierte, setzte er ein deutlich wahrnehmbares Zeichen, daß die gerade erst souverän gewordene Bundesrepublik nach den Jahren des nationalsozialistischen Terrors den Anschluß an die internationale Moderne zurückgefunden hatte. Die Ausstellung, die sich unerwartet schnell als Welterfolg entpuppte, trat mit einem konkreten didaktischen Konzept an: Es sollte ein direkter Bezug zur 1937 von den Nationalsozialisten organisierten Ausstellung "Entartete Kunst" hergestellt werden. Der lange abgerissene Kontakt mit der internationalen Kunstszene sollte, vor allem für ein junges Publikum, demonstrativ wiederhergestellt werden. Die ersten Aufregungen sind also vorüber; der rote Teppich, den die Bundesbahn auf der Rampe des ICE-Bahnsteigs für die Besucher ausgerollt hat, ist noch makellos sauber; die vielen Mitarbeiter des Documenta-Teams sind noch guter Dinge. Das Publikum aber strömt in ganz ungewöhnlichen Formationen durch die vier Häuser: Es sind nicht die routinierten Kunst-Konsumenten, die in die vielen Video-Kabinen, Film-Boxen und Dia-Höhlen drängen, es sind sehr viele junge Leute, die den Marathon der Verdunkelungen als eine sportliche Herausforderung, die technisch generierten Kunstwerke aber als ein vertrautes Medium zu empfinden scheinen. Und es sind erfreulich viele ältere Menschen, die sich fast trotzig dem Experiment der Zeitgenossenschaft unterziehen, ein wenig misstrauisch den Parcours betreten, nach den Anstrengungen aber sichtlich animiert die Häuser verlassen. Für beide Gruppen scheint es eine Erlösung zu sein, dass die Gretchen-Frage „Ist das noch Kunst?“ in der Fülle der aufbereiteten Realitäten gar nicht erst aufkommen kann. Read more... Esto hace que el público se sienta, a la vez, como en su casa o como en la calle: asediado por las imágenes repetitivas y efímeras de los medios, la publicidad y el diseño. La gran pantalla lo ocupa todo. Si los espacios artísticos de exhibición introducen un corte, una cesura, una descontextualización, que refuerza la intención estética de las propuestas artísticas, en la Documenta 11 se ha optado por lo contrario. El resultado es una intensa sensación de familiaridad, de cosas ya vistas. Nada llama demasiado la atención. El arte se repliega a una función de crónica social, con un trasfondo pretendidamente crítico, que en realidad tiene más que ver con un cierto moralismo bien pensante, construido sobre la base de cuotas de representación: lo políticamente correcto se apropia del espacio rebelde e intempestivo del arte. Es ist die Spannweite, mit der sie Kunstformen ausstellt, die an ihrer eigenen Realität etwas über die Realität der globalisierten Gegenwart zu entdecken geben. Sie verschafft der Fotografie ein großes Comeback. Sie lädt den Film zu sich ein. Sie toleriert den Videoessay. Sie lässt die Installation leben, wenn auch selten so stark wie in Annette Messagers ebenso bunter wie schwarzer Ansammlung zuckender menschlicher und tierischer Leiber. Mit den verwitterten Schrifttafeln von Glenn Ligon gesteht die Documenta 11 auch dem unbewegten Bild ein starkes Solo zu. Der Concept-Art gewährt sie einen furiosen Auftritt in der Präsentation der Maria Eichhorn Aktiengesellschaft, in deren Akten die Künstlerin, die außer Kontrakten und Banknoten nichts zur Erscheinung bringt, in feinem Amtsdeutsch als "die Erscheinende" firmiert. Auch die Performance ist vertreten. In einem Glaskasten werden die Folgen der Jahreszahlen aus den Büchern von On Kawaras One Million Years verlesen - eine minimale Musik aus Wort und Zahl, die ein Bündnis mit dem monumentalen, rein aus Zahlen komponierten Kontrabasssolo opus 45 schließt, mit deren Partituren Hanne Darboven die Rotunde des Fridericianums ausgekachelt hat. През октомври 2000 е обявен неговят екип от шест куратори: Carlos Basualdo, Ute Meta Bauer, Susanne Ghez, Sarat Maharaj, Mark Nash и Octavio Zaya (повече информация за историята и организацията на събитието на: http://www.documenta.de) Между март 2001 и септември 2002 се осъществяват петте платформи на Документа 11, което значително удължава обичайните 100 дни на изложбата. Тези платформи са проведени на различни места на четирите континента: Първата е във Виена и Берлин; втората – в Ню Делхи, Индия; третата – на остров Ст. Лучия в Карибието; четвъртата в Лагос. Всяка със своя собствена тема и поредица от дискусии, лекции, семинари, уъркшопове и видео презентации с участието на изявени теоретици, художници, политици от цял свят, платформите се опитват да "формулират един критичен модел, който обединява разнопосочни културни и художествени кръгове на съвременния глобален контекст." Menschen mit schmalem Geldbeutel können sich nicht mehr auf eine großzügige "Kunst-für-alle"-Geste verlassen, wie sie sogar die gestrenge Französin Catherine David bei der zehnten Documenta generös machte. Ansonsten führt die diesjährige Schau (Leiter: Okwui Enwezor) in vielem einfach die David-Documenta fort (Theoretisierung, Globalisierung, Dokumentarismus u. a.) allerdings mit lauerem Zugriff, mit zu oft schlechteren ja richtig peinlichen (z. B. Pascale Marthine Tayou, Feng Mangbo, Adrian Piper) Arbeiten. Immerhin setzen der Schweizer Thomas Hirschhorn und der Kanadier Ken Lum kraftvolle Freiluft-Akzente: mit größerer Sinnlichkeit, als sie viele Arbeiten in der Binding-Brauerei (wir berichteten), dem Fridericianum mit der Documenta-Halle und dem Kulturbahnhof besitzen.
