Organized by Giancarlo Politi and Helena Kontova, editors of Flash Art
magazine, together with Milan Knizak and Tomas Vlcek, directors of the
National Gallery in Prague, the inaugural edition of the Prague
Biennale, "Peripheries become the center," is one of the major art
events of the year. This benchmark exhibition showcases the work of
around 260 emerging artists from all over the world, selected by a team
of 30 influential curators, to create a pluralistic vision of
contemporary art today. A huge survey realized with a low budget
(compared to other blockbuster exhibitions), the Prague Biennale has
pushed its organizers to face amazing challenges, but these constraints
represent a move towards new horizons, new solutions, and new exhibiting
philosophies.

ARTFORUM

After a nearly four-year hiatus during which infighting and political posturing nearly brought about its demise, the Bienal de São Paulo resurfaced with an exhibition that was a compromise from its inception. In desperation two years ago the Bienal Foundation made the tactical decision to turn to a foreign curator, Alfons Hug, an act of disavowal akin to what academic departments call receivership: the "we can't do it; you do it" approach to conflict (see News, January 2001). A German national who has held various curatorial and cultural-envoy positions worldwide (mostly with the Goethe Institut; he is currently director of the Rio de Janeiro branch) but who had never curated a major international show, Hug was faced with an unenviable task: to bring the high-profile exhibition, one of the three most important biennials in the world, into line, making it fiscally responsible while preserving its significance. In this endeavor Hug was as successful as anyone could have hoped. The event was efficient, pleasant, and quite elegant, rather like a large, sensible German sedan. But glaringly absent were the heat, chaotic spontaneity, and grace under pressure (to say nothing of the "body and soul") that shape Brazilian life as much as they inform the stunning Oscar Niemeyer building that housed the show.

RACHEL WITHERS reports from the Sydney Biennale
Artforum
05.11.02

Location: North Sydney's amazing open-air Olympic Pool. Arching over it: the Harbor bridge. The sun's out, the water's warm—and my body is a temple. No, don't laugh! Nose clip to the fore, I've been plowing up and down the lanes, in compliance with my new biennale health regime. From 1976 on, each biennale of Sydney has had a theme: "European Dialogue" (1979), "Origins, Originality and Beyond" (1996), "Every Day" (1998), and so on. So I'm unofficially designating Richard Grayson's 2002 biennale—proper title: "(The World May Be) Fantastic"—as the Biennale of "Not Being Chronically Fried to the Tonsils." Maybe all biennales should come with a government health warning.

10 Hours of Internet art at the Tirana Biennial
Interview with Miltos Manetas
http://www.electronicorphanage.com/biennale/press/interview.htm
by Valentina Tanni

A big contemporary art show in a very unusual place, with an impossible budget and many big names.
These are the ingredients of the first Tirana Biennial, organized by Flash Art’s director Giancarlo Politi in response to the Venice Biennial, considered obsolete and unable to deliver a convincing portrait of today’s visual arts.
In this attempt to give a complete outline of contemporary , couldn’t miss a space for the Internet. The Web section, which includes over 40 projects, has been curated by the volcanic Greek-born artist Miltos Manetas –now working in USA- involved for many years in a stimulating investigation on the world of the computer screen, which includes paintings, digital prints and web projects.

Der immerwährende Reichstag des Kunstbetriebs auf Biennale-Tour.
HOLGER LIEBS
